Author Day Programs
Invite Laurie to speak to your school or group!
Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton is a former teacher with 15 years of classroom experience. Laurie offers three presentations a day. Her programs are age-appropriate, eye-catching, interactive, and inspirational. Her presentation illustrates book writing from idea to publication. Students will learn interesting facts about the publishing field and how their passion can become a reality through writing. Laurie offers a packet of extended activities to fit the classroom curriculum. Her elementary school schedule is as follows:

Bring in your own personal author/illustrator for a week!
Spend a week with author/illustrator and former teacher Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton as she entices your teachers and students to a higher level of writing skill. All of Laurie's programs are age-appropriate, curriculum-motivated, interactive, educational, and most importantly, fun! This exciting week covers the basics of story writing: Main Character, Setting, Problem, Conflict, Crisis, Solution, Character Growth, Self-Editing, Critiquing Techniques, and Group Writing. The week consists of three, one-hour programs per day: Monday: Teacher in-service and two large group programs Tuesday-Thursday: Three one-hour programs with small groups Friday: Two small group programs and one teacher in-service *Notes: - Laurie will adjust the programs to your school's needs. - Several of Mrs. Knowlton's publishers offer a book discount so that if books are sold during the week, the proceeds can help pay for her visit. |

Author Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton will share her latest book, There Was a Librarian Who Chewed On a Word, with preschool – 1st grade students. Laurie’s book contains all six pre-reading skills highlighted in the Every Child Ready to Read @ your library guide. Laurie will reinforce these skills by encouraging the children to make a book using Ellison die-cuts to retell the story. The children will leave with a book they have made.
Pop-Up Book Basics
Author/Illustrator Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton will lead workshop attendees through learning five unique paper engineering folds to make Pop-up pages. Participants can then add language, poetry, and pictures to their booklet. Each participant will leave with a Pop- up booklet they completed.
Poetry Dreams

The Poetry Dreams workshop will guide participants to use words, language, images and sound to write poetry. Author/Poet Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton will lead participants in exploring unique poetry structures. Workshop attendees will develop their own poetry based on the shared poetry structures. Each participant will leave with a booklet of poetry structures and a poetry booklet written during the workshop.
Writing a Pattern Picture Book
Book: There Was A Librarian Who Chewed On A Word, Pelican Publishing, ISBN: 9781589808928
Author Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton will encourage writing cumulative stories with students ages seven and up. Using her latest book, There Was A Librarian Who Chewed On A Word, and many other versions of There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly, Laurie will teach the basic structure of the story and then encourage the students to write a story of their own making. Laurie will provide structure worksheets for the students to create their stories.
Cowboy Program

Author Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton will present her two books while encouraging interaction by the participants. Students will become familiar with a cowhand’s clothing by assisting in dressing a felt-board cowboy. Each participant will design their own brand and will leave with a bandanna they designed.

We will discuss the meaning of the pledge and the colors of our flag, and how we are the fabric of America. Participants will observe the fabric illustrations from the book and make a fabric collage.
